No connections. No ZED fares. Sometimes the most appealing destination is one with multiple direct flights daily. For QA/CASS Analyst Lindsey Guetter, two daily flights from MSP to AMS made for a “nice and easy” Dutch getaway full of stirring history and memorable food.
What was your destination, and why did you choose it?
We chose Amsterdam because there are two direct flights from MSP, plus other options through many other cities. My husband had never been there, and it is one of my favorite places.
What route did you take to get there?
MSP-AMS-MSP. Nice and easy!
Where did you stay while you were there?
We stayed at Lloyd Hotel. It used to house immigrants and was once a detention center. It’s about a 10 minute tram ride from Amsterdam Centraal Station. There is also a grocery store across the street that we used to buy water and breakfast foods to save some money. www.lloydhotel.com
What was your favorite memory or activity?
I really enjoyed the National Holocaust Memorial and Museum. It has only been open a few months, but they are working hard and opening areas as they are completed. Some videos are only in Dutch, and it’s small, but what they have completed right now is moving. The Memorial is a long video that explains the timeline of the war and how the Jewish population was treated. After this, I walked to the Dutch Resistance Museum and learned how the Dutch people fought back.
Do you have any helpful tips you’d like to share?
For some good Dutch food, we enjoyed The Pantry and Hap-Hmm.
Piqniq is near the Jordaan neighborhood and has delicious tapas-like meals. A flight attendant friend at DL suggested Quartier Putain for a warm drink and pastry. Getto had good burgers and very good fries.
